Hi, I'm Derrick Barasa.

I build scalable web platforms, financial tools & enterprise systems.

> Java Vert.x

Software Engineering student at The Co-operative University of Kenya and former remitcore development intern (2025–2026). I turn compliance, payments and payroll problems into reliable, event-driven systems with Java Vert.x, Laravel and Vue.js, and ship them live.

Engineering Full-Stack Systems & Cloud Deployments

I am a Software Engineering student focused on engineering high-performance microservices, full-stack enterprise web platforms, and production-grade software applications.

From 2025 to 2026 I was a software development intern on the remitcore team, working on compliance and data analysis in 2025, then system development, system design, testing and mobile apps (Flutter and Kotlin) in 2026.

My work spans custom domain production deployments (biopay.africa, automoti.site, salaryd.com, countcomply.com) as well as internal enterprise systems ranging from accounting and healthcare to canteen operations.

I focus on modular software design, database integrity, non-blocking asynchronous event handling, and practical cloud infrastructure.

Principles Behind Every System

Modular design

Clear modules and services, so features can grow or change without breaking the rest of the system.

Database integrity

Careful schema design, migrations and relational modeling keep data consistent, from ledgers to patient records.

Non-blocking by default

Event-driven Java Vert.x services that handle asynchronous work without holding up other requests.

Shipped, not just built

Deployed on Render with custom domains and DNS, so the work runs live for real users.

Systems I Can Build For You

Case studies

Case study CountComply · remitcore internship, 2026

Inside CountComply: compliance in one place

Problem
Compliance teams juggle screening, policies, risks, reminders and filings across spreadsheets and email, which makes deadlines easy to miss and audits painful.
Approach
One platform for AI-assisted AML/KYC screening, policies, enterprise risks, obligations, filing tracking, board oversight and a full audit trail, on an event-driven Java Vert.x backend with a Vue.js interface and PostgreSQL.
My role
System development and system design, plus testing, as part of the remitcore development team. Before that, I worked on the compliance and data analysis side in 2025 (Excel, Power BI, pandas), which shaped how I designed the product.

Case study BioPay · Humanitarian payments

Inside BioPay: identity you can pay against

Problem
Humanitarian programmes need to register people, confirm each person is who they say they are, and then pay them or issue vouchers, often where the internet is unreliable.
Approach
An offline-first platform for biometric registration, payments and vouchers. Liveness detection runs on the ONNX runtime, and biometric payloads are processed with low latency so a registration or payment does not keep people waiting.
My role
I worked on the whole platform: the frontend, the backend and the app, and deployed it to production on a custom domain (biopay.africa).

Case study MedicAid (HMS) · Healthcare

Inside MedicAid: one system for every role in the hospital

Problem
Hospitals that run on paper and spreadsheets lose time between departments. The front desk, doctors, nurses, pharmacy, lab and finance each hold a piece of a patient's story, and no one sees the whole of it.
Approach
One system for patient care, admissions and discharges, pharmacy, lab, billing, HR and payroll, and facilities. Each of seven roles lands on its own dashboard and sees only what is relevant to them. A Java Vert.x API on PostgreSQL handles JWT sign-in and checks every request against administrator-managed roles and permissions on the server, and a Vue and Vuetify interface covers the screens. Prescribing is checked against allergies and drug interactions, vitals are scored with NEWS2, bills can be paid by M-PESA STK push and claimed from SHA, patients get their own portal, and a read-only FHIR R4 API exposes records to other systems.
Scale
7 roles · 86 pages · 54 backend services · 73 database tables.
My role
I built the whole system: the Vue and Vuetify frontend, the Java Vert.x backend and the PostgreSQL database design.

What Working With Me Looks Like

The same four steps on every project, from the first conversation to a system your team can run.

Step 1

Discovery call and brief

We talk through the business problem, who will use the system and what done looks like, then agree the scope.

Step 2

Design and data model first

Screens, user roles and the database are planned before any coding, so the system holds up as it grows.

Step 3

Build in small stages

You see working versions early with demos along the way, and can change direction while it is cheap to do so.

Step 4

Test, deploy and hand over

Testing, going live on your own domain, and a proper handover so you know how it works.

Fixed-price projects Hourly or monthly Internships and junior roles Remote from Nairobi (EAT) Replies within 24 hours

Common questions

How do we start?

Send me a message with what you need, using the form or WhatsApp. I reply within 24 hours, and we set up a short call to understand the problem.

How do you charge?

Fixed price for projects with a defined scope, or hourly or monthly for ongoing work. I quote after the discovery call, so the price matches the scope.

Do you work with clients outside Kenya?

Yes. I work remotely from Nairobi, on East Africa Time, with clients anywhere.

What happens after the system goes live?

It depends on the project. We agree what support you need before we start, whether that is a handover only or ongoing fixes and updates.

Can you build something that is not on your list?

Yes. The systems above are the ones I have built most, but I build custom software for any business. Tell me what you need and I will scope it.

Canteen System · Technical note

How the M-PESA payments work

Some dishes must be paid for online first, so a customer who pays must get their food and a customer who does not pay must not. The payments are built on M-PESA STK push through Safaricom Daraja, in Java Vert.x and PostgreSQL.

The flow

The server checks the order is the customer's and the phone number is a valid Safaricom number. It saves the attempt as initiated with a unique reference, then asks Daraja to send the STK prompt to the phone. Only a confirmed result marks the payment captured.

1. The callback is a hint, not proof

Daraja's callback has no signature the server can verify, so anyone who found the address could fake a result. It is only used to look up the payment. The server then asks Daraja's authenticated status endpoint, and that answer decides. A forged callback cannot move money.

2. Assume some callbacks never arrive

A scheduler runs every 60 seconds and re-checks attempts that are still waiting. Attempts with no answer after 15 minutes are marked failed, so the customer can retry. "Still processing" counts as "ask again later", never as a failure.

3. Every step is safe to repeat

A unique reference stops a double-tap from charging twice. Capture only updates a payment that is still waiting, so when the callback, the status check and the scheduler all arrive together, exactly one of them wins.

The code is in a private repository, and I am happy to walk through it.
